Embargoed until Government lockdown is lifted for golf
From lockdown to lift-off for Woodford golfers
Woodford Golf Club which once boasted Prime Minister Clement Atlee, the founder of the national health service as a member, is readying itself for lift off from coronavirus lockdown.
Golf has been played on the links at Woodford Green for over 125 years. Only two World Wars could intervene to temporarily stop play. That was until the arrival of the coronavirus. Since the 27th March golf in the UK has been in lockdown and along with thousands of golfers across the country members at Woodford have been consigned to watching instruction videos, re-runs of Open Championships and honing their garden and living room swings. But that is now set to change.
The golf club is predominantly run by volunteers and operates on a tight budget – so lockdown has been a challenge for the Club. But as Mark Deeming the Club Secretary says, “We are a small club with big ambitions. And we have always been proud of our voluntary and community ethic. It is this ethic combined with some welcome government support that has helped us weather this storm. The club has been here 125 years, we are resilient and plan to be around for at least another 125”.
Golf at Woodford takes place on Epping Forest land and although set aside for golf it also provides access to the public. In the period of lock-down the course has played a vital role as a place for exercise, fresh air and escape. The Golf Club wants the public to know that they are still welcome, but just ask that they join the golfers in showing mutual respect and take care as the course re-opens and balls start flying again – and not always in the direction intended!
Although golf is returning to the links at Woodford, it will not be golf as members formerly knew it. Not for a while at least. New social distancing rules will be in force that limit the size of groups, spread tee times, prevent touching of flag sticks and eschew the customary handshake at the end of a round. And it will be some time before the ‘19th hole’ is open again. But as the Club Captain Alan Pickett says, “there will be a new normal for golf and we need to be sensible and take care. But we are all desperately looking forward to getting back to the game we love. Golf is as much about seeing friends, getting fresh air and exercise as it is about playing the game. And my message, not just to members but to all our visitors, is that you are welcome, and we are open for business!”
